CBID - Cover versions: Hard Rock and Jerry Lee

CBID is never complete as new records and CDs appear and some old rarities are discovered. This section presents interesting additions and corrections to CBID.

Today: a wild mixture from blues to hard rock — and some more Jerry Lee.

CARBURETORS (Norway)

Hard rock quintet from Oslo who had their first single out in 2002 titled “Burning Rubber”. Edwing Pinilla Gustoff (vocals), Kai Kristiansen (guitar), Stian Krogh (guitar), Gunnar Lund Wang (bass) and Cristopher Lindahl (drums).
However, they all use various nicknames like Eddie Guz, Kai Kidd, Stian K, King O’Men and Chris Nitro. Their music is said to be a mix of Chuck Berry and Motörhead.

Hard rockin’ version. A-side is “Lords Of Thunder” written by the band.

Sweet Little Rock And Roller (2:41) 2018

This was a limited edition. Really noisy hard rockin’ version. A-side titled “Hurricane” written by the band.

Wee Wee Hours (2:44) 1961

Now this is a rare one. 45cat doesn’t have it and neither do Rockin’ Records but you’ll find it mentioned on the Rockin’ Country Style site . Anyway, it’s a lightweight white blues rendition, but still interesting that someone covered it in 1961 and released it as an A-side. The Fabulous Silver Tones had it as a B-side in 1960 (see page 1180).

Previously unissued. It says in the booklet that this was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis in late ‘70s, however, on-line it says 1973 or ’74 and also 1979. Take your pick, I did. Again it’s annoying that one can’t print when the damn thing was recorded. There must have been a tape-box or something. In 73-74 he was with Mercury. Anyway, the medley is again typical Jerry Lee but the sound is a bit woolen. What’s the matter with the guys mastering sound these days?

The sound here is also a little woolen (don’t like the mastering) but the song itself is okay in typical Jerry Lee style. Another Berry cover to fill in on the very long list of Jerry Lee Lewis Sings Chuck Berry. You can also add “Carol” on the Ace CD above.

California band who plays something described like pop-punk.

I haven’t heard this one either. It never stops regarding Berry covers. This one was spotted on eBay on 1 July 2020. Think of all the ones we still don’t know about???
